The simplicity of "Shadows" can easily deceive a casual glance. The artist confesses that this piece to be an experiment with drypoint. Presumably this is an artist's proof and I would encourage the artist to make a short edition before making any alterations.
The beauty of this piece lies in its simplicity. And given the subject matter, a hooded figure with its features lost in the shadows, this minimalist elegance is most appropriate. In the abstract the forms of this image resemble the non-objective work of Jean Arp. In this case however the forms depict a mysterious figure. The unnatural slope of the shoulders evokes a sense of Otherness about the enshrouded figure.
The artist makes good use of drypoint's ability to depict subtle tonal transitions with delicate shading. And even still the artist was able to achieve deep dark masses. The plate was lightly wiped allowing some marks from of the tarlatan to remain. This only heightens the effect of the image.
Overall the artist has managed to create a haunting and evocative image with a remarkable economy of means.
